We tackle the social injustice of lost learning in England’s schools

We support school and trust leaders to design and implement a whole school inclusion strategy that strengthens internal capacity, reduces exclusion and improves outcomes for vulnerable pupils.

The Challenge

Many mainstream schools are managing increasing complexity of need, rising suspensions and ongoing SEND reform. Leaders are being asked to strengthen inclusion while balancing staffing, funding and accountability pressures.

For many schools, the question is not whether inclusion matters. It is how to develop a clear inclusion strategy that is realistic, affordable and embedded across the school.

We work alongside leaders to make that work practical.

Evidence & impact

Our work with schools has contributed to:

  • Reduced suspensions
  • Improved attendance for pupils at risk of exclusion
  • Clearer systems for measuring inclusion
  • Stronger internal capacity to reduce lost learning

For policymakers and supporters

The Difference also work with system leaders and partners to inform policy and scale evidence-informed approaches to inclusion.

If you are reviewing your whole school inclusion strategy or exploring an inclusion support base, we would welcome a conversation.

At THE DIFFERENCE, we develop PEOPLE, PRACTICE and POLICY to reduce exclusion and absence across England by 2030

PEOPLE: We deliver programmes for school leaders which develop practice expertise and strategic tools that support them to implement a Whole-School approach to Inclusion.

PRACTICE: We capture effective approaches from schools in our programmes and network. We then share and showcase methods proven to improve student outcomes and reduce lost learning.

POLICY: Using insights from our programmes, we inform and shape education policies which improve student outcomes and reduce lost learning.
